Abstract

This research aims to analyze the defense mechanisms used by female characters in the play Mourning Becomes Electra by Eugene O'Neill. Through a psychoanalytic approach, this research explores how the female characters in this play respond to the psychological pressure they face through defense mechanisms. This research applied Anna Freud's theory to identify 10 types of defense mechanisms in the characters. This research found that Lavinia Mannon and Christine Mannon in ‘Mourning Becomes Electra’ used defense mechanisms as a way to protect themselves from their complex psychological conflicts. Based on the results of this research, the types of defense mechanisms used by female characters in this play are 6 denial, 5 regression, 5 displacement, 4 rationalization, 3 reaction formation, 2 repression, 2 projection, 2 fantasy, 1 intellectualization. There was only one type of defense mechanism which was not used by these females’ character, namely sublimation. In addition, Lavinia Mannon tended to employ denial to cope with emotional trauma, and Christine Mannon often relied on regression to manage her stress and responsibility.
