Abstract

This research aims to describe the phenomenon of psychopathic behaviour in the novel Berlin Syndrome by Melanie Joosten with a literary psychology approach, using Sigmund Freud's and Hare's psychoanalytic theories. Basically, literary psychology pays attention to the psychological problems of the characters contained in literary works. The target in this research is the phenomenon of psychopathic behaviour experienced by the main character by examining the characteristics of psychopathic behaviour and the influence of childhood trauma which can be a factor causing psychopathic behaviour in adulthood. The data analysis technique used is a qualitative descriptive technique. Based on the results of the study it can be found that the characteristics of the main character's psychopathic behaviour in the novel Berlin Syndrome by Melanie Joosten are: glib and superficial, egocentric and consider themselves great, lack of remorse or guilt, behavioural problem in childhood, anti-social in adulthood. From these characters can be found childhood trauma factors that influence behaviour in adulthood, tends to be a psychopath namely kidnaping, torture, and abuse.
