Abstract

The aims of this research are to find out how Zuko's character is described and how his character develops in the animated series Avatar the Last Airbender. In the process of describing Zuko's character, the writer uses psychoanalytic theory of Sigmund Freud to reveal his motivation as well. Meanwhile, the writer also uses Erikson's Theory of Psychosocial development stages to find out Zuko's character development process in the story. In order to accomplish these aims, the writer thoroughly observed the entirety of the Avatar the Last Airbender episode. Then, the writer selected multiple significant scenes involving the characters, which would serve as valuable data for further analysis. Subsequently, these selected scenes were described regarding the context, and analysed by employing the previously mentioned theories. Through analysis, the writer found out that Zuko has described as a dynamic character. He has a complex personality since he often shows his good and bad sides throughout the story. Besides, he has motivations that drive his action. Meanwhile, Zuko's development process shows failure at stage 4, Industry vs Inferiority and then success at stage 5, identity vs identity confusion despite experiencing many difficulties.
