Abstract

The research aims to determine the plot and setting of the movie. The researcher used qualitative descriptive research method. Data was taken from the movie and also subtitles of The BFG movie as the subject of the research. This research applies the theory of Abrams (1999) for the stages of plot formation and the theory of Nurgiyantoro (1998) for the setting. Based on the results of the research, the stages of plot formation started from the introduction of Sophie and her bravery (exposition), proceeding to the moment Sophie met the giant (rising action), she was then hunted by the evil giants (climax), thus she and BFG asked Queen’s help (falling action), and ended with the giants were placed in certain place (resolution). The results of the data regarding the setting are 1980s during the reign of Queen Elizabeth II (time), humans and giant’s world (place), and not believing in the existence of giants (social). The stages in this research are generally used to find the plot and setting by using expert-based theory so that viewers movie can easily find out the plot and setting.
