Abstract

This research was conducted by using qualitative method. It was aimed to find out the kinds of social deixis, the kinds of social deixis which mostly occur in newspaper The Jakarta Post. There were several steps in collecting data namely watching the movie, identifying, taking note, and classifying. Furthermore, the writer analyzed and explained the data by using Levinson’s theory and counted the data to find out the type of social deixis which mostly occur in the newspapers. Based on the analysis of the data, there were two types of social deixis those are Relational and Absolute. There were four kinds of Relational which found in the newspaper The Jakarta Post, namely addressee honorifics, referent honorifics, bystander honorifics, speaker and recipient, and one kind of two kinds of Absolute deixis that is authorized recipient which mostly occur in the newspaper in The Jakarta Post. The writer cannot found the speaker and setting (formality levels) which is include in Relational social deixis. Therefore, the writer could conclude that interpreting the references of social deixis expressions depended on the speaker’s perspective psychologically and physically.
