Abstract

This research discusses the features and function of women’s language used by Jo March in Little Women movie. The researcher conducted this research by using Lakoff's theory (2004) to identify the types of women’s language features and Holmes and Wilson's theory (2022) to identify the function of women’s language. The researcher used a descriptive qualitative method. The data were taken from Jo March's speech. In this study, researcher found 9 out of 10 types of women’s language features which are lexical hedges or fillers, rising intonation on declarative, empty adjectives, precise color terms, intensifiers, hypercorrect grammar, super polite forms, avoidance of strong swear words and emphatic stress. The most dominant women’s language feature is hypercorrect grammar with 10 out of 35 Jo March utterances. There are 2 functions of the women’s language features which are weakening function (hedges devices) and strengthening function (booster devices). Then the most dominant function of women’s language features is weakening function (hedges devices) with 20 out of 35 Jo March utterances.
