Abstract

This research aims to find the types of impoliteness strategies and their functions, as well as how the response towards its impoliteness in American competitive reality television series Hell’s Kitchen season 19: Las Vegas. This study used descriptive qualitative method, while the data was obtained by watching and observing, and then take notes on the impolite utterances that occurred in that reality show. This research used the Jonathan Culpeper’s theory to analyze the impoliteness strategy and function as well as the theory of Derek Bousfield to analyze the response towards impoliteness. 30 data were found which were then analyzed into three categories, namely strategy, function, and response. In terms of impoliteness strategy, there are 5 bald on record impoliteness (16.7%), 8 positive impoliteness (26.7%), 9 negative impoliteness (30%), 6 data off-record impoliteness (20%), and 2 withhold politeness (6.6%). Then on the impoliteness function, there are 11 affective impoliteness (36.7%), 16 coercive impoliteness (53.3%), and 3 entertaining impoliteness (10%). In addition, in response to impoliteness, there are 13 accepting the FTA (43.3%), 7 defensive countering (23.3%), 5 offensive countering (16.7%), and 5 no response (16.7%).
