Abstract

This study aimed to examine the correlation between students' simple past tense mastery and their ability in writing narrative texts. Students' mastery in understanding the simple past tense is one of the language features of narrative texts which can affect their ability to write narrative texts. However, in reality, some students misunderstand the important points of narrative text, specifically the simple past tense, so they also are unable to write the text properly and correctly. This research is quantitative research with correlational techniques. The data were collected from giving tests to students in the form of simple past tense tests and writing narrative texts. The subject for this study was 36 second grade students at SMAN 1 Setu for the 2022/2023 academic year. The analysis of data statistic was done using the statistic technique Pearson’s product-moment correlation with the program SPSS 25.0 for Windows. The average result of the students' simple past tense test score was 67.75 and the average result of the students' test score in writing narrative text was 66.72. The results of the hypothesis showed that there was a relationship between students' mastery of the simple past tense and their ability to write narrative texts. The correlation value was 0.633 and it shows the relationship between variables is high.
