Abstract

The aim of this research is to find, identify, and classify the kinds of central vowels in the songs on the album "Prism" by Katy Perry with-and without the “r” sound in English. These songs are Roar and Legendary Lovers. This research applied a qualitative method with analysis of observational data. In this study, the writer tried to find and explain the central vowel followed by the "r" sound and without the "r" sound in each position of the words: beginning, middle, and end. In addition, to describe the role of the articulators of the different central vowels in each word. This research applies the theory of Ladefoged and Johnson for the rhotic r, Peter Roach, and Bruce Hayes for the position and dimensions of the central vowel in the mouth. Based on the classification analysis, there are 35 words that contain the central vowel schwa [ə] and hedge [ʌ] with and-without the sound “r”. Central vowel [ɚ] contains 12 data (34%), [ə] also has 12 data (34%), and followed by [ʌ] there are 11 data (32%), while [ʌr] 0 data. It can be concluded that the central vowel with the highest frequency is [ɚ] and [ə].
