Abstract

This study is aimed to explain the weak and strong forms in the grammatical words through the phonology approach in the songs lyric by Bruno Mars. The writer conducted this research from March to July 2019. The research uses a method of qualitative research. This research combined theory from Skandera and Burleigh (2005) and theory by Roach (2009) as the main theory. In this research, the writer analyzed how to pronounce weak and strong forms in the grammatical words by Indonesian singer in three Bruno Mars’ songs. The writer also tried to find kinds of weak and strong forms in grammatical words in the songs lyric in four categories: auxiliary, conjunction, preposition, adverb, and determiner. The most types of grammatical words found in this data is auxiliary with 12 data. From the analysis process, the total data found in this study is 20 data. The results of the research showed that in approximately 75% in pronouncing weak and strong forms by Indonesian singer in the grammatical words in the song lyric is correctly. Then, based on the classification into the syllable in the song lyrics, weak forms dominate 70% pronunciation in grammatical words, while strong forms is 30%.
