Abstract

This research is a phonology research. The purpose of this research is to explain about dark, clear, voiced, devoiced, syllable, and non-syllable phoneme //l/ in the songs by Ed-Sheeran. This research used methodology qualitative descriptive research. In this research, the writer combined the theory from Delahunty (2010, Ortega (2009), Salzmann (2012), Peter Roach (2009), and Ulrike Gut (2009) as the main theory. The total data of this research is twenty-five data. They are eight dark /l/, seventeen clear /l/, ten voiced /l/, fifteen devoiced /l/, one /l/ syllable, and twenty-four non-syllable. Steps of the data analysis are: (1) collect the data from listening 3 songs by Ed-Sheeran, (2) identify the data based on the type, voicing and syllable, (3) classified the data to the dark or clear, voiced or devoiced, and syllable or non-syllable, (4) make the conclusion from the data analysis. Result of the research found dark /l/ (32%), clear /l/ (68%), voiced /l/ (40%), devoiced /l/ (60%), syllable /l/ (4%), and non- syllable (96%).
