Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the extent of the pronounciation ability of fricative phonemes and what mistakes are made by fourth semester students in reading short story by Alice Munro entitled "Runaway". This research applied descriptive qualitative method, while the data were collected by recording fourth semester students while reading “Runaway” short story. From the recording, the writer will choose which words have fricative phonemes and listen carefully, whether there are mistake in the pronunciation of fricative phonemes in the selected words. This research applies the theory of Kezhavaz to determine pronounciation mistake of fricative phoneme and the theory of sari. et al. to distinguish the pronunciation of fricative phonemes. As the results of representative data, In Nur Akmalia S, there are 5 pronounciation mistake words that contain phoneme fricatives. In Rio Effendi there are 3 pronounciation mistake words that contain phoneme fricatives. In Rico Wibowo, there are 2 pronounciation mistake words that contain phoneme fricatives. Last, in Andiva Ardhana there are 6 pronounciation mistake words that contain phoneme fricatives. From these mistakes, it can be concluded that the mistakes were caused by nervousness, in a hurry, unprepared. Because if you look at the background of the fourth semester students, they have studied phonetics and phonology.
