Abstract

The aims of this research are to describe: 1) The main factor through sociological approach and 2) Classifying the types of violence based on the context in the novel. This research applies descriptive qualitative method and data collection are by reading and observing every word in the quote of conversation that contains violence in the novel Oliver Twist. This research uses the theory of Elizabeth Kandel Englander and theory of George D. Zgourides & Christie S. Zgourides. The result of data findings which found the main factor in 5 categories and the types of violence found 6 types. The results of this research show the main factors which contains of social stratification, poverty, social conflict, discrimination, and deviance, while the results of the types of violence in the novel Oliver Twist by Charles Dickens which contains of physical abuse, neglect, emotional and verbal abuse, crimes, and slavery. Mostly, the main factor occurs in this research is social stratification, while the types of violence that mostly occurs are physical abuse and verbal abuse experienced by the main character in the novel Oliver Twist.
