Abstract

The paper is aimed at knowing the difference of onomatopoeia’s meaning and forms in British and American Englishes at Romeo and Juliet graphic novel by John McDonald and Gareth Hinds. There are 32 onomatopoeias from 3 acts which used as the data of this research. This implementation of this research is conducted from June, 19th 2020 to August,15th 2020. Descriptive qualitative method is used on this research by analyzing the onomatopoeias through the related theory. There are 3 theories used on this research, (1) Jespersen’s natural sound sources which divided to bow-wow, pooh-pooh and yo-he-ho theory, (2) Hinton’s sound symbolism category includes corporeal, imitative, synthetic and conventional, (3) Hinton’s sound-symbolic form as reduplication, use of segment and suprasegmentals and asssosiation of certain phoneme classes with certain semantic fields. The result of this research show the difference of onomatopoeia in British and American Englishes for the same situation implies on its meaning, category and form
