Abstract

This research studies about the flouting of maxims performed by characters in The Boss Baby movie. The aims of this study is to classify the types of maxims that are floated, to describe the conversational implicature resulted by flouting maxims, and to find out the type of flouting maxims that most often appear in The Boss Baby movie. To achieve the aims of the study, the writer uses Grice’s Cooperative Principle theory in Cruse (2000), Cutting (2002), and Birner (2012) in analyzing data. This research is a qualitative research in which the writer interprets the utterances which contain the type of flouting maxims in this movie. The results showed that 30 utterances of flouting maxims were identified made by characters in The Boss Baby movie. In this study, the writer found all types of flouting maxims occurred in The Boss Baby movie, which is quantity, quality, relation, and manner committed by 2 characters, that is Boss Baby and Tim. There is flouting maxim of relation 15 data or 50%, flouting maxim of quantity 9 data or 30%, flouting maxim of manner 5 data or 17%, and flouting maxim of quality 1 data or 3%. So it can be concluded that the type of flouting maxims that occurs most frequently is flouting maxim of relation.
