Abstract

This research is aimed at explaining the differences in news from the mass media. This research applies qualitative methods, while data is obtained by reading carefully and observing words, phrases or clauses which can then determine the differences in text meaning (macrostructure and superstructure) and context (social context) in mass media. The research media studied were the mass media VOA and Al Jazeera in reporting the Israeli and Palestinian conflict. This research uses the theory of Van Dijk (1980) as the main theory. This research data reaches twenty from three VOA titles and three Al Jazeera titles. The results of this research show that the news discourse studied has a text structure, namely a macrostructure which consists of several similar themes but each story displays differences, a superstructure which shows how VOA's news structure is different from Al Jazeera's, which can lead to differences in things that want to be prioritized and context, namely the social context or alignments related to power and access. Keywords: macrostructure, superstructure, social context, news.
