Abstract

The phenomena of code-switching are very popular in media such as television or YouTube. In Indonesia, especially in podcast program, the ability to speak more than one language is not at all remarkable for the presenters or the hosts. This study aims to analyse the types of code switching performed by Najwa Shihab and her guest star through the show, and investigates the reasons why the presenter switches codes while presenting in “Catatan Najwa” YouTube channel. In conducting this study, the writer used a qualitative approach. Two episodes in “Catatan Najwa” YouTube channel were chosen to be analysed using Hoffman (1991) theory of code switching. From the analysis of two episodes, the researcher found that Najwa Shihab and her guest star used code switching based on some motives. Based on the analysis, the researcher found 20 data of code-switching. Hoffman’s theory was applied for the classification of code-switching. The findings showed that the most dominant type was intra-sentential switching (15), followed by inter-sentential switching (4), and the least is tag switching (1). This study also explored the reasons for using code-switching by applying the theory proposed by Hoffmann (1981). The findings showed that the most dominant reason was talking about a particular topic (10), followed by being emphatic about something (7), doing interjection (1), quoting somebody else (2) and repetition for clarification (1). Keywords: Sociolinguistics, code-switching, YouTube
