Abstract

This study was a pragmatic study of the use of politeness strategies. It aimed to investigate politeness strategies and sub-strategies used by characters in Uptown Girl movie. It utilized descriptive qualitative method to describe those mentioned strategies, clearly. This study used Brown and Levinson’s politeness theory in order to identify strategies and sub-strategies. The data of this study were utterances that was uttered by characters from Uptown Girl movie script. This study concluded that there were 4 strategies used in the movie. Those strategies were bald on record, positive politeness, negative politeness, and offrecord. Furthermore, this study also identified that the were 2 sub-strategies in bald on record, 15 sub-strategies in positive politeness, 10 sub-strategies in negative politeness, and 15 sub-strategies in off-record. In total, there were 42 sub-strategies that was derived from those strategies.
