Abstract

This investigation falls within the broader field of linguistics, specifically as a sociolinguistic study. The primary objective of this research is to examine the gossip among female characters in Bridgerton Season 1. More precisely, the focus is on discovering the various types of gossip and describing the functions of gossip in the interactions of female characters within Bridgerton Season 1. The researcher used Deborah Jones’s theory (1980) and Eric Foster’s theory (2004) to analyze this study. A descriptive qualitative method was employed in this research to achieve these goals. The researcher undertook several steps in the data analysis process, including identifying errors in data collection to ensure the appropriateness of the information, categorizing gossip by the female characters in the TV series Bridgerton Season 1, and analyzing the types and functions of gossip employed by the characters. From the 133 data found, the types are 59 related to chatting, 52 house-talk, 50 scandal, and 25 bitching. Furthermore, the functions are to provide information with 97 data, to enhance friendship with a total of 81 data, to influence others with 41 data, and to give entertainment with a total of 7 data. Hopefully, this research can provide another perspective on gossip in the future. Keywords: sociolinguistics, gossip, Bridgerton Season 1
