Abstract

The purpose of this research is to examine the swearing words in the Euphoria play using a Sociolinguistics approach. It also analyzes the categories of swear words and the reason for swearing from the characters in Euphoria while explaining the etymology of each word that contains swear words and the breakdown of the speech event. This research uses Ljung’s theory to identify the categories of swearing words, and Wardhaugh’s theory to explain the reason for swearing. The method used is qualitative in which the data taken is in the form of words that relate to swear words in Euphoria script. From the 666 data found, there are 441 related to sexual activities themes, 138 scatological themes, 44 minor themes, 23 sex organ themes, 16 mother themes, and 4 religious themes. Furthermore, there are 12 reasons for swearing. There are to mock authority with 7 data, draw attention with a total of 3 data, and the reason to show contempt & to provoke have the same total of 1 data.
