Abstract

This research aimed to identify the semantic roles present within the digital newspaper The Jakarta Post and identify their grammatical relations using a method called meaning component analysis. The study, conducted as descriptive qualitative research, utilized news articles from The Jakarta Post related to the issues at Pondok Pesantren Al-Zaytun. The Jakarta Post newspaper articles about Pondok Pesantren Al-Zaytun's teaching issues served as the research's primary source of data, and the articles were published between June 24 and July 7, 2023. The researcher adopted a documentation approach to gather data, involving sequential steps of reading, selecting, collecting, describing, and concluding. In the data analysis phase, the author referred to Saeed's (2016) theory of semantic roles to characterize the semantic roles observed in the research data. Additionally, the grammatical relations of these semantic roles were expounded using Payne's (2006) theory of grammatical relations. The results of this study show that there are 65 patterns classified into 10 semantic roles in the sentence. The roles are the agent (22 data), patient (6 data), theme (16 data), beneficiary (2 data), instrument (2 data), location (3 data), goal (7 data), source (3 data), and stimulus (1 datum). In this study, there are also 41 patterns classified into seven grammatical relationship elements. The elements are subject (22 data), direct object (13 data), indirect object (2 data), absolutive (1 datum), genitive (1 datum), and oblique (4 data).
