Abstract

The aim of this research is to analyze the lexical and structural ambiguities in movie “Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)” by Anthony and Joe Russo. This research applied descriptive qualitative method. While the data of this research were collected by watching the movie Captain America: The Winter Soldier. The theory applied to this research by Hurford and Heasley (2007) for lexical and structural ambiguity. Then the theory of Ullmann (1972) for causal factor of ambiguity. Based on the results of the selected data, the research shows that there are twenty-five words found in this movie. First, lexical ambiguity found fifteen data, consisting of six data in polysemy and nine data in homonymy. In addition, there are ten data of structural ambiguity. Second, the causal factor of ambiguity found sixteen data of lexical ambiguity, which consists of polysemy with six data, homophones with no data, homographs with two data, and homonyms with seven data. In addition, eleven data were found from structural ambiguity, which consisted of grammatical form with one data, equivocal phrase with five data, and contextual ambiguity with five data. As the result, the dominant ambiguity in this movie is lexical ambiguity
