Abstract

This study aims to find out how the differences of tense and lax in front vowels contained in the album "Midnight Memories" by One Direction. This research was conducted from April to August 2022. The kind of research that used is a qualitative methods, where the author plays a role as an instrument of this research. This research explores about the tense and lax in front vowel contained in the album "Midnight Memories". The theory used in this study is the theory of Brinton, Mc. Mahon, and Roach. The author also classifies the types of front vowels in which is present in the album. The study focused only on three songs tittles midnight memories, through the dark, and don't forget where you belong. Interpretation data from the author's analysis found 36 data that were types of front vowel. Front vowel /i:/ has 25%. Vowel front /e/ has 13.9%. The front vowel /I/ has 41.7%. Vowel front /æ/ has 19.4%. Meanwhile, there is no data found for the front vowel /ɛ/. It is shows that the front vowel in the three songs are a lot and identically have more lax vowel.This analysis shows that the most front vowel that found on the three songs and their identity is lax. (pronounced short).
