Abstract

The aim of this research is to find out the types and syntactic structures of sentences ditransitive verbs in 13 selected short stories by Lucy Maud Montgomery. This research applied a qualitative descriptive method, while the data was collected by the observation method, then through the note-taking technique sentences containing ditransitive verbs in 13 selected short stories by Lucy Maud Montgomery. This research applies the theory of Gropen et al. in Beavers and Koontz-Garboden for determining the types of ditransitive verbs and also used the theory of Burton-Roberts as a guide in making syntactic structure of the sentences. Based on the selected data, the types of ditransitive verbs found in these 13 selected short stories by Lucy Maud Montgomery are 6 verbs that inherently signify acts of giving, 1 verbs of sending, 3 verbs of instantaneous causation of ballistic motion (Verbs of throwing), 2 verbs of continuous causation of accompanied motion in deictically, 7 verbs of future having, 6 verbs of type of communicated message, and 0 verbs of instrument of communication. As the result, out of the 25 ditransitive verbs found, the verbs of future having type has the largest number of occurrences, with 7 occurrences. This type is a form of a verb that can own, hold or possess something in the future period of time. For the syntactic structure of sentences from ditransitive verbs, it is presented in syntactic analysis using tree diagrams to describe the placement of indirect objects.
