Abstract

This research aimed to identify word or phrase that contain form of jargon, reveal meaning of jargon and describe the function of jargon used by online shop in Amazon.com. This research uses Yule’s theory about particular area of work/interest and supporting theories about form jargon by Halligan about form jargon as acronym, abreviation, word and phrase. This research used descriptive qualitative method in the revealing data. The finding of the research reveal that there are 25 jargon used by online shop in Amazon.com. The jargons are in the form of acronym, abbreviation, word and phrase. Most of the jargons are in the form of word with 14 jargon items (56%). This implies that word are the most prominent form. In this study the meaning of jargon used by online shop on Amazon.com is connotative meaning and denotative meaning. The meaning of the most jargon is denotative meaning with 24 jargon items (96%). This implies that the literal meanings are much more understandable. According to the functions of jargon, most of the jargons were to to provide the word or phrase clear and unambiguous terms to refer to their activities with 13 jargon items (52%). This implies that the jargons used by online shop in amazon.com has clear and unambiguous function.
