Abstract
The aim of this research is to find out the types and functions of taboo words in the 2016 Deadpool movie. This research applied descriptive qualitative method, while the data were collected by watching the movie and then listening to dialogues containing taboo taboo words in the 2016 Deadpool movie. This research applies Timothy Jay's theory to the types of taboo words and their functions. Based on the selected data, the types of taboo words found in 2016 Deadpool movie are 1 cursing, 1 profanity, 14 obscenity, 2 vulgarity, 5 epithets, 7 scatology, 4 insults and slurs. Out of the 34 total findings, obscenity type has the largest number of occurrences with 14 occurrences. This type is considered to be the most effective type to curse or even insult someone. For the function of the taboo words found in the 2016 Deadpool movie are 2 joking, 5 surprise, 8 sarcasm, 15 anger and/or frustration, and 4 descriptive-evaluative. The anger and/or frustration function has the largest number of occurrences with 15 occurrences. This function is considered to be the most appropriate function for releasing anger to prevent attacks of aggression.
