Abstract

This research aims to see if the portrayal of Arthur/Joker is considered sympathetic, to see if said portrayal is more sympathetic in relation to other Joker portrayals and to see how Realism is embodied in said portrayal. Phenomenology method was used in this research, and data was collected by watching the movies and taking a screenshot of notable events. The researcher used Rimmon-Kenan‘s theory of characterization and Sklar’s definition of literary sympathy to determine sympathetic portrayal and Barrish’s definition of Realism to determine its embodiment in the movie. Through analyzing the data, the researcher found that Arthur/Joker’s portrayal was sympathetic through his suffering. Said portrayal was also different from other Joker portrayals through Arthur’s motivation being revenge instead of a philosophical point. The researcher believes the comparatively normal way Arthur was portrayed made him easier to sympathize with. The researcher also found that Realism was embodied in the film through the use of real-life problems in the movie. Said Realism, the researcher believes, is used in context of the film to warn of the consequences should said problems in society are not dealt with.
