Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find the symptoms, causes, and impacts of Munchausen syndrome by proxy experienced by Patty Watts. This research is conducted at home and applied descriptive qualitative method. This research applies the theory of APA in the book DSM-5 for the symptoms of the illness, the theory of Gwen Adshead and Deborah Brooke for the causes of the illness, and the theory of Marc D. Feldman for the impact of the illness. As the results of representative data, Patty had Munchausen syndrome by proxy since she has a daughter named Rose Gold. The symptoms of the illness are Patty fabricated illness on her daughter for eighteen years and deceived other people to gain benefits. The causes of the illness are Patty experienced physical abuse by her parents when she was a child, which caused another psychological problem, lost her older brother who committed suicide, had marital problems, and did not know how to raise a child. The impacts of the illness are Patty could not live a normal life after being imprisoned, her daughter might inherit Patty’s illness, and there was discrimination from the environment because the illness was still considered taboo.
