Abstract

This study aims to explain the types of courtroom questions used by lawyers, types of responses used by witnesses or accused, and the correlation between the questions and answers from both perspectives. The subject of the research is the dialogue in the cross-examination in Primal Fear Movie. The research used descriptive qualitative method. The main theory of this research is the courtroom questions of Gibbons (2008) and the Cooperative Principle by Grice (1975). The result of the research shows that courtroom questions Declaratives used 8 times (26,7%), Tag Questions 4 times (13,3%), Polar Yes-No Questions 12 times (40%), WH-Questions 4 times (13,3%), Projection Questions 2 times (6,7%). The use of courtroom questions can express several functions: asking for confirmation, seeking agreement, asking to supply truth value, or calling for elaboration. The results of the analysis of the relationship between answers and questions based on the Cooperative Principles. Out of the 30 questions, 16 answers are answered in a manner cooperative by witnesses or accused. At the same time, 14 answers indicated that the witness and accused violating the provisions contained in the cooperation principle
