Abstract

This study aims to find a rhetorical device in the transcript of Denzel Washington's speech with the titled "Put God first" at the graduation of Dillard University. This study applied descriptive qualitative method, while the data were collected by close reading and observing the rhetorical devices contains in the transcript of Denzel Washington's speech. This study applies the theory of Robert Alan Harris to a variety of rhetorical devices and model of critical discourse analysis by Van Dijk. Based on the selected data, the kinds of rhetorical devices found in speech transcripts are 1 (parralelism), 3 (epizeuxis), 6 (anaphora), 1 (anadiplosis), 2 (antimetabole), 3 (enumeration), 2 (climax), and 3 (methapor). All kinds of rhetorical devices Denzel uses in the transcript of his speech to make his speech more interesting to listen his speech.Empirical data are contributed to the lecturers, the students, and the next researchers. For lecturers, it is recommended to use references for teaching. Then, for students, it is suggested to use references in learning and applying how to become good public speaker. Moreover, this research can provide the important direction which can be followed up by the next researchers. It would be good if the next researcher uses other types of speech
