Abstract

This research aims to analyze the discourse markers found in news articles from the Jakarta Post. This study analyses discourse markers in Jakarta Post news articles using a descriptive qualitative approach. The data were analyzed by applying the theory of discourse markers from Halliday and Hasan (1976). The result showed there were 52 discourse markers included 34 additive markers, 4 adversative markers, 10 causal markers, and 4 temporal markers. Regarding the function of discourse markers from Schiffrin (1987), the findings provided was 46 functions of discourse markers included 40 markers of connectives, 3 markers cause and effect, and 3 markers temporal adverb.
