Abstract
This research aimed to knowing and studying the process analyzes the meaning of words contain metonymy used by the newspaper “The Jakarta Post”. The writer conducted this research from May to July 2019. This research used descriptive qualitative method in the revealing data. This research uses theory by Chomsky (2006) about cognitive linguistic in the form of thinking or cognition and supporting theories about approaching in semantic by Saeed (2016). The main theory used cognitive metonymy about conceptual mapping metonymy by Lakoff and Johnson (2003). The finding of the research reveal that there are 24 data the meaning of words contain metonymy’s expression used by the newspaper “The Jakarta Post. There 4 steps to analyzes metonymy use cognitive process such as identify, analyzes, classify, and the conclusion. After understood the steps, the result were various in the kind of conceptual mapping metonymy, there are 7 kinds of metonymy’s expression use conceptual mapping that exist is the most of the kind of metonymy are in the concept of Institution for People Responsible with 9 words (38%). This implies that word was mentioned are the most prominent metonymy’s expression use cognitive process. The total data found in this study is 24 data. Those are the result the kinds of metonymy in the cognitive process to know the meaning of word contain metonymy in the newspaper “The Jakarta Post”.
