Abstract

This research aims to discover the types of conjunctive relation of grammatical cohesion, to describe presupposition of the conjunctive items, and to determine the distance in the ties in the transcript of speech „Find Your Purpose‟ by Mark Zuckerberg. The transcript of speech is from the website of The Harvard Gazette whose video on the YouTube channel of Harvard University. This research applied descriptive qualitative method, and collected data from the words and phrases that contain the types of conjunctive relation. This research applies the theory of Halliday and Hasan (1976) for conjunction of grammatical cohesion as the grand theory. The result of this research found 38 data in the transcript of speech by Mark Zuckerberg which describes the types of conjunction, and shows the relation of distance in conjunctive item. The percentage of conjunctive relation‟s types consist of Additive 26.3%, Adversative 57.9%, Causal 7.9%, and Temporal 7.9%. The percentage of distance consists of Immediate 79%, Mediated 0%, Remote 15.8%, and Mediated and Remote 5.2%. Based on the data, the dominant type of conjunction is Adversative 57.9%, and for the distance‟s type is Immediate 79%. This research is suggested could be further examining and as a reference to assist understanding.
