Abstract
The aim of this research is to find the types of similes and symbols in the 1989 album by Taylor Swift and for Identify the meanings of simile and symbol in Taylor Swift's songs. The analysis of this study is simile and symbol with the subject being 6 songs from Taylor Swift's 1989 album. The songs are entitled welcome to new York, blank space, bad blood, wildest dreams, I know places, clean. The theory used to analyze the data is the theory of Ortony and Klarer (2004) in analyzing the types of simile and symbol, and also using Abrams' theory (1999) to classify the types of figurative language. This study applies a qualitative descriptive method, while the data is obtained by listening to selected Taylor Swift songs first then reading carefully and observing words, phrases or clauses that contain figurative language especially in simile and symbol figures of speech in Taylor Swift's 1989 album. This research applied descriptive qualitative method, while the data were collected by close reading and observing the words, phrases or clauses that contains the simile and symbol types in The song lyrics by Taylor Swif. This research applies the theory of Ortony (1993) and Abrams for figurative language types, theory of Klarer for types of symbol. As the results of representative data, the types of simile and symbol found in the album song lyrics by Taylor are 9 simile that is 4 literal simile and 5 non literal simile, meanwhile for symbol there are 20 symbol with the 13 data conventional symbol and 7 personal symbol. This result of the research found. From the result. the writer concludes that the types of simile and symbol which exist the most is conventional symbol.
