Abstract

The purpose of this study was to identify the types of class shift and the equivalence of translation in Matt Hagg's novel Midnight Library. This study uses a qualitative descriptive method. The writer used Catford's theory about types of translation shifts and Nida and Taber's theory about translation equivalence. The result shows that there are 15 types of class shift that occurred, namely; adverb to verb 1 data with the percentage of 2.5 %, adverb to verb 6 data with percentage of 15%, noun to adverb 2 data with the percentage of 5%, verb to adjective 3 data with percentage of 7.5%, noun to pronoun 1 data with percentage of 2.5%, verb to noun 3 data with percentage of 7.5%, adjective to adverb 2 data with percentage of 5%, noun to verb 3 data with percentage of 7,5% noun to adjective 4 data with percentage of 10%, pronoun to noun 7 data with percentage17.5%, adverb to adjective 2 data with percentage of 5% adjective to noun 3 data with 7.5%, adjective to noun 3 data with 7.5%, adverb to noun 1 data with percentage 2,5%, conjunction to adverb with percentage of 2.5%, preposition to noun 1 data with percentage of 2.5%. The research also shows that there are 2 kinds of equivalence that occurred in the data; there are 17 data of dynamic equivalence with percentage of 42.5% and 23 data of formal equivalence with percentage 57.5% of. In this study, all types of word class changes and equivalence are used in general as utterances and words that can be understood by readers.
