Abstract

This research studies offensive language made by gamers in the Dota 2 online game. The aims of this study are to classify the types of offensive language, and to find out the most frequent types of offensive language types of the utterances used by gamers in the Dota 2 online game. To achieve the aims of the study, the writer used Timothy Jay’s theory of offensive language. This is a qualitative which the writer interprets of utterances that contain the types of offensive language words in the Dota 2 online game. The result of the study showed that 30 utterances of offensive language word were successfully identified that made by the gamers in Dota 2 online game. In this study, the writer found that the gamers used the types of offensive language, such as Cursing 13.33%, Profanity 10%, Blasphemy 0%, Taboo 0%, Obscenity 3.33%, Vulgarity 3.33%, Slang 3.33%, Epithets 20%, Insult and slurs 46.66% and Scatology 0%. So it can be concluded that the dominant offensive language types if Insult and Slurs, because this Dota 2 game contained many offensive language of the gamer the writer suggest not to uttered any kind of offensive language in the wrong place
