Abstract

The purpose of this research is to find the types of metaphors and strategies used to translate the metaphors in the subtitles of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness film. Theory of Newmark used to identify the types of metaphors and theory of Larson used to analyze strategies for translating metaphors. The writer took 30 data from English and Indonesian subtitles of Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness film. This research used a qualitative method. The researcher concluded that 5 of 6 metaphor type found in the film, including dead metaphors with 6 cases (20%), cliche metaphors with 4 cases (13.33%), stock/standard metaphors with 13 cases (43 .34%), adapted metaphor with 3 cases (10%), and the original metaphor with 4 cases (13.33%). In Next, 3 of 5 strategy to translate metaphor found in the film, which are to kept the metaphor because receptor language permits (M → M) with 9 cases (30%), translating metaphors into another metaphor (M→another M) with 2 cases (6.67%), and translating metaphors into non-metaphor words (M→non-metaphoric words) with 19 cases (63.33%). The translation of metaphor is important and needs attention because metaphor is a figurative language in which every language can be different.
