Abstract

The purpose of this study is to analyze complex transitive verbs in the online newspaper of The Wall Street Journal including to identify the object predicative and to illustrate the sentences in tree diagram. This research is a qualitative description covering collecting the data from newspaper articles, analyzing two complements of complex transitive verb (direct object and object predicative), determining the type of object predicative, and depicting tree diagrams from the data found. The data for this study were obtained from articles in online newspapers in The Wall Street Journal focusing on World-Asia topic. This research refers to a theory from Burton-Roberts for various categories of object predicative from complex transitive verb, they are noun phrases, adjective phrases or propositional phrases. The results showed that among the data which had been analyzed there were two types of object predicative mostly appeared, they are 2 data with noun phrases as object predicative (8.70%) and 21 data with prepositional phrases as object predicative (92.30%).
