Abstract
The purpose of this study is to analyze the Head and Modifier of the sentence structure functions in compound sentences in the novel It Ends With Us. This research is a qualitative descriptive method. While the data of this research was obtained from reading the novel It Ends With Us. This research is a theory from Noel Burton-Roberts for the function of sentence structure to determine the Head and Modifier of Noun phrases and Verb phrases found in compound sentences. The results showed that, firstly, in research on the function of sentence structure in compound sentences, the Modifier in every Noun Phrase (NP) or Verb Phrase (VP) found in compound sentences will always depend on the Head, but not every NP and VP has a modifier for the head. Furthermore, the Noun Phrase in this study more dominating than Verb Phrase where the number of Noun Phrase data is 52 while the number of Verb Phrase data is 50. Second, in this study using a tree diagram as a comparison each illustrating data from Noun Phrase and Verb Phrase taken to determine the Head and Modifier.
