Abstract

The aim of this research is to find the similarities and differences of simple past tense in simple sentence between English and German Languages. This research using descriptive qualitative method and the data were collected by reading and compare the language in “Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone” Novel. This research applies the theory of Tarigan for contrastive analysis and Azar for English grammar and Fehringer German grammar. As the results of representative data, there are 4 similarities and 5 differences. Similarities in the two languages are found in sentence structure, subject, verb, and object in sentences. The differences in the two languages are found in affiliation morphemes, definite articles, words, affixations, and pronouns. Based on the data, it is found that there are more differences in the two languages compared to similarities.
