Abstract

The aim of the research is to analyze the use of commissive speech acts in Joe Biden's speech, identify their types and functions, and determine how they are pronounced, either directly or indirectly. This research uses a qualitative descriptive method, with data gathered by watching videos on the YouTube channel and reading transcripts on the White House website, which includes commissive speech acts in Joe Biden's speech. This research uses Searle and Vanderveken's (1985) theory for the types and functions of commissive speech acts, and Yule's (2017) theory for the types of speech acts used, whether direct or indirect. The results showed that, first, there were 6 (six) types of commissive speech acts, namely commit (2 data), promise (12 data), refuse (4 data), offer (1 data), assure (2 data), and guarantee (1 data). Second, there are 2 direct and 20 indirect ways the data is being uttered.
