Abstract

This study aims to analyze the modulation in the novel “Shadow and Bone”. This research is a qualitative descriptive study. While the data for this study were obtained from reading the novel “Shadow and Bone” and Indonesian version. This study applies Newmark's theory to the types of modulation. The results show that, there is a shift in viewpoint between the source language and the target language. There are five types of modulation found in this novel, namely 15 Abstract for Concrete, 8 Reversal of Term, 3 Active for Passive, 2 Cause for Effect, 2 One Part for Other. And there are some modulations that are not found in the novel “Shadow and Bone”: space for time, intervals and limits, and change of symbols.
