Abstract

The purpose of this study is to find the use of ellipsis in song lyrics and determine the type of ellipsis used. The research method used is a qualitative method. The data source of this research is an album of songs Natural Causes (2016) from Skylar Gray which contains 13 songs. The main theory used in this research is the theory of Halliday and Hasan (1976). Of the 13 songs in this album, the researchers found the use of ellipsis in 12 songs. In the 12 songs, all types of ellipsis are used, namely nominal ellipsis, verbal ellipsis, and clausal ellipsis. In analyzing, the researcher included the lines of song lyrics as research data that would be examined one by one. Pieces of song lyrics that become research data can consist of one to three lines. From a thorough research, there are 37 data. From all these data, it was found that the use of nominal ellipsis 5 (13.51%), verbal ellipsis 20 (54.06%), and clausal ellipsis 12 (32.43%).
