Abstract

This study aims to identify linguistic variations in AAVE, there are three types, namely grammar, pronunciation, and vocabulary, but the author only uses two variations, grammar and vocabulary, also compares sentences or utterances in two languages, namely vernacular language and standard language. This study uses a qualitative method, while the data is obtained from conversations between the two main characters in the film Bad Boys, played by African Americans. This study uses Janet Holmes theory for meaning change. Based on the results of the selected data, found 32 data on linguistic variations in the film Bad Boys, there are 26 AAVE data grammatically in AAVE, namely double negative 10 data, copula/auxiliary absence 6 data, negation 5 data, nominal 2 data, invariant be 1 data, specialized auxiliary 2 data, and also 6 vocabulary data in AAVE.
