Abstract

This research aims to analyze the mapping of metonymy in The Jakarta Post newspaper. The author examines this paper by applying a qualitative descriptive method, then the researcher obtains data by reading carefully and observing words or phrases that contain elements of the type of metonymy. This research uses Lakoff and Johnson's theory for types of metonymy. Meanwhile, it uses Geeraerts and Cuyckens' theory for Cognitive Semantics. In the first stage, analyzing words containing metonymy, second classifying words containing metonymy into types of metonymy, third interpreting words associatively, and finally interpreting words lexically. Based on the results of research conducted by the author from the data that has been studied as much as 20 data. The types that have been found are Parts for the Whole with 1 data (5%), Objects Used for Users with 8 data (40%), Controllers for Controlled with 1 data (5%), Institutions for Responsible People with 5 data (25%), Places for Institutions with 4 data (20%), and the last is Places for Events with 1 data (5%). Of all the types of metonymy studied, it functions as a substitute meaning to get the appropriate meaning of the word, to make the reader understand the meaning and function of the word in the sentence.
