Abstract

The aims of this research are to analyze the translation strategy of the Phrasal Verb in the novel The Devil All the Time. This research is a qualitative descriptive method. Meanwhile, the data for this study were obtained from reading the English and Indonesian translations of the novel The Devil All the Time. This research applies the theory of Wyatt for the kinds of phrasal verb and theory of Baker for the translation strategy. The results of the research show that, first, there are five phrasal verb found in this novel, namely, 15 intransitive phrasal verb with the percentage 48,38%, 9 transitive phrasal verb where the object can come in one of two positions with the percentage 29,03%, 2 transitive phrasal verbs where the object must come between the verb and the particle with the percentage 6,45%, 3 transitive phrasal verbs where the object must come after the verb and the particle with the percentage 9,67%, 2 transitive phrasal verbs with two object, one object is between verb and particle and the other one after the particle with the percentage 6,45%. The second, there are 4 types of translation strategies used by the translators of this novel, namely, data 9 translation by a more general word with the percentage 29,03%, 14 translation by a more neutral/less expressive word with the percentage 45,17%, 6 translation by paraphrase using a related word with the percentage 19,35%, 2 translation by paraphrase using unrelated words with the percentage 6,45%. And there are some strategies that not found in the novel “The Devil All the Time”: translation strategy by cultural substitution, translation strategy using a loan word or loan word plus explanation, translation by omission, and translation by illustration.
