Abstract

This study aims to analyze more deeply about types of thematic roles. The object used in this study is The Jakarta Post newspaper. The theory used to analyze types of thematic roles in the theory of Saeed (2003). Furthermore, the method used in this study is the analysis descriptive qualitative method. The process in analyzing the data are: (1) preparing the data, (2) analyzing the data, (3) discussing the data, and finally (4) concluding the data. This research led to the conclusion that from the nineteen data analyzed show that twenty-five of five types of thematic roles in sport column of The Jakarta Post there are, agent (40%), experiencer (12%), beneficiary (20%), location (12%), and goal (16%). Furthermore this research can be used as a development reference that can be applied to other linguistic studies such as film, magazine, and the others.
