Abstract

The paper is aimed at knowing and comprehends the meaning of use of cognitive meaning that is focused on metonymy in the Vertigo novel by Amanda lohrey 2009. This study was conducted in March to July. 2017. This research is a qualitative research using research methods such as: literature and linguistic studies. The steps of this study are as follows: (1) preparation of data collection, (2) data collection process, (3) data sorting, (4) data analysis and (5) data retrieval. These steps will result in a conclusion regarding metonymy that found in the Vertigo novel by Amanda Lohrey. The result was found in the metonymy concept, part for the whole 30 %, Producer for product 41%, Object used for user 7%, controller for controlled 7 %, Institution for people responsible 4%, the place for the institution 0%, and the last place for Event 11%. It can be concluded that in the Vertigo novel by Amanda Lohrey she using many metonymy concept to refer to something else. Furthermore, this research can be used as an additional reference in other linguistic studies
