Abstract

The objectives of this research are to understand the meaning of presupposition and to describe the types of presupposition in “The Lucky One” novel by Nicholas Sparks. This study was started in early March until the end of July 2017. This research uses descriptive qualitative research method, the technique of getting the data are: (1) reading and observing the novel, (2) finding the data by making a sign in novel, (3) taking the data and presenting them in data display, (4) analysis of the data already collected, and (5) conclusions of the data. These technique will produce a conclusion about the notion of presupposition and the types of presupposition generated from the context in a conversation contained in every part of the conversation between two people in “The Lucky One” novel. This study uses presupposition theory from Yule (1996) in classifying 6 types of presupposition. From data collected, the writer found 25 presuppositions and the most dominant type of presupposition that used in “The Lucky One” novel areexistential presupposition and factive presupposition, it is shown from the data that there are 6 existential presuppositions, 3factive presuppositions,5 lexicalpresuppositions, 5 structural presuppositions,1 non-factive presupposition, 5 counter-factive presuppositions. In this study, the writer also tries to describe the function or the significance of presupposition to find the meaning of utterances which expressed by the author to the reader. The most common of presupposition function which the writer found in this novel was as a tool for the author to share information and express their feeling through presupposition, it is because they need to deliver information that the writer believe the reader already known the intended meaning.
