Abstract

This research is intended to explain the prefix of the words [im], [in], [il] and [ir] in English. The research media studied are two short story titles written by Washington Irving. This study uses a qualitative descriptive analysis method. This study combining the theory of Francis Katamba (1993) as the main theory. The data of this study reaches twenty-one, consisting of ten prefixes -im, eleven prefixes -in, 0 prefixes -il and 0 prefixes. The process of analyzing this data are: (1) preparing the data, (2) analyzing the data, (3) discussing the data, and the last one (4) making conclusions of the data.The results of this study indicate that the prefix -im in the prefix appears as much as ten (48%), prefix –in appears as much as eleven (52%), prefix –il and prefix -ir not found.
